Harley went very peacefully to the rainbow bridge today. The last few chemo treatments didn't do the trick to beat back the lymphoma. I have seen little signs over the past few weeks but wanted to finish out the meds that we were trying. She did OK until this past week and then was having on and off days where she would be very tired and could not stop panting (actually going from laying down to lifting her head panting). She was also starting to show disinterest in eating at times. I probably could have waited a few more days but that would have only been for me as I knew she would only get more uncomfortable and there was nothing that would cure her. Our vet came to the house and Harley went very calmly and peacefully laying on her blankets & my pillow, surrounded by her toys and with a belly full of her favorite foods while I talked softly to her, looked into her eyes and patted her head. The vet was wonderful. We had talked yesterday and she told me she has a dog that is 20 years old and that she is having difficulty deciding"when". She asked a colleague for advice since she is having a hard time being objective and her colleague said if you are lucky enough to have the choice then make the decision so her last days are not the worst. That got me through last night and this morning. It's very difficult letting go when you still can see those little tale wags and sparks of light. I will miss Harley dearly and I know the days ahead will be difficult getting used to not hearing her sounds and breathing and just knowing she is not by my side as she always, always was. I am so lucky to have shared the last 6 1/2 years with her. She brought much laughter, smiles and amazement to me, my family, coworkers, neighbors, friends and even strangers! She is a beautiful soul that will live in our hearts forever! :dogbark:

Oh honey, I'm so sorry. Harley was such a precocious girl, with her bandanas and those big sweet eyes. But she's with you forever now, watching over you from the bridge. :hugsmiley :hugsmiley :hugsmiley

Donna, my heart hurts so much for you. But, thank you for knowing that Harley needed you to do this one last thing for her. I agree with Lynn that we'll be reunited with our babies again, I have to believe that. You were such a good doggie mom - and Harley was such a pretty girl. Lots of prayers and hugs sent to you.

My heart is breaking for you and I am trying to type this sensibly. My tears are falling for you, Donna. But yet, I know you made the right decision. We will miss Harley, dearly. But we know that she is also happy and whole again, waiting for you...

Take care, my friend. :hugsmiley

Thank you for your thoughts everyone. I know quite a few of you have recently lost your precious fur babies and know how hard it is especially the first few days. It just hurts so much to do everything without her for the first time and not have her following me everywhere as she always did but I am grateful that I could bring her peace. I got to spend time with my 3 month old granddaughter Isabel and my daughter's Golden Casco for a few hours yesterday which really helped but it was very hard going home last night and not having Harley there to greet me. My kids, granddaughter & Casco are coming to my house today to watch the Superbowl so it will be good to have them around again. My husband has been wonderful helping me too. He said yesterday that even though he didn't really want another dog when we brought Harley home as a pup (he got outvoted by the rest of the family) she was such a great dog that she managed to make him fall in love with her and he really misses her too. Amazing what these Goldens can do! He is totally on board with bringing home a new pup in a few months. I so hope that the breeding a couple of weeks ago works out and I will hear some good news from the breeder soon. I know I cannot replace my precious Harley girl but I also can't wait to welcome another beautiful golden soul into my family. Thanks again all.

Donna
